Marks’s interesting and evocative writing really humanizes the process of cryptography and puts a lot of my own problems in perspective. Eric’s been trying to get me to read it for ages, and Between silk and cyanide finally got around to between silk and cyanide. Most interesting, however, is how Marks discovered that the Dutch underground had been penetrated and compromised by the German Gestapo.

I hope he stops soon or this will be shelved with the “page rule” books. Marks is young during the war, in his early twenties. Probably aware of how ludicrous it would be to take oneself too seriously in a climate in which the most serious matters are treated so lightly, Marks never misses an opportunity to skewer his own failings.
