Another well-written and entertaining novel set in Modesitt’s world of Recluce, this one picks up where Natural Ordermage leaves off, following Rahl as he continues to make a life for himself in Hamor. Review: Mage-Guard of Hamor
Rahl does continue to grow in this story which is very nice to see. Modesitt continues his habit of describing many of the main character’s meals in detail, and readers of prior Modesitt books may also enjoy reading about some of the new foods he describes. While not necessarily the best hopping on point being a direct sequel to Natural OrdermageModesitt makes a point of delivering a complete story. Exiled from Recluce because his strength and his talent were frightening to the establishment, Rahl suffered a high level of abuse in the last book. In Hamor, his powers have increased, but so has the amount of trouble he attracts. The gradual reveal of great things for young Rahl was so obvious, in light of what Modesitt has been with his heroes in other books, that I was impatient for it to happen already. Modesitt did leave the option viable, however, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
I am even going to buy another copy just so I have it.
The intrigue and maneuverings of the various Hamorian factions leads to action and war. This is the story of how he gains both more knowledge and power, and more self-control.

Unfortunately, you do need to read this for some closure to Natural Ordermage. Rahl is considerably more mature now, although he does still exasperate poor Taryl from time to time.

In the continuing saga of Recluce, Modesitt picks up the threads of Rahl, the exiled natural order mage. I have been a fan of Mr. He has also magw technical studies and articles, columns, poetry, and a number of science fiction stories.
I liked it better than Natural Ordermage where the main character was more annoying than likeable. I guess she changed her mind when the story needed a happily ever hajor which feels like a cheat on the arc of both the characters.
