The first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier was composed in the early s, with Bach’s autograph dated Source and alternative formats: Cxerny’s preface, with bio sketch by Philip Hale not included here.

In Bach’s time Clavier keyboard was a generic name indicating a variety of keyboard instrumentsmost typically a harpsichord or clavichord — but not excluding an organ either. Helmut Walchabetter known as an organist, recorded both books between and on a harpsichord.
