But recently a long out-of-print title, The Council of Egypt ,oro, was republished in UK by Head of Zeus, so all my old admiration was out again and I felt it so freshly that I finally made the plunge.
The Moro Affair
And in there, somewhere, she mentions Moro and Sciascia. The Moro Affair is about a political assassination by Italian terrorists known as the Red Brigade who were mro by that grand master of genocide, Stalin.
Aldo Moro was for thirty years a politician. Many of these are quoted in part or in full here. The book has an intellectual density and brutality of logic that reminds me of the best nonfiction of V. Naipaulespecially Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey and its companion volume. His own party has decided not to negotiate with terrorists. This is not the Aldo Moro we know, it says, suggesting that he has been turned by the Red Brigades. But Sciascia is here to argue convincingly that Moro had not been so turned.
The essay closes with a blistering condemnation of the police and carabinieri whose incompetence looks too incompetent. There are Keystone Cops shorts stronger on procedural logic than was brought to bear on the Moro Affair. Meanwhile, Sciascia thinks the whole Red Brigades operation concerning Moro to be the most efficient demonstration of Italian logistics to date.
Nothing else in Italian life quite prepares one, he suggests, for the precise timing and seamless operation of the Red Brigades. The second piece here is about the disappearance of the brilliant Italian physicist, Ettore Majorana, during the Fascist years. Like its fellow, it speculates on some of the unsolved mysteries of its subject. As a piece of writing I enjoyed it perhaps affair than the title essay.
Jun 25, David-Baptiste Chirot rated it it was sciacsia. I am almost done the first of the two short books within this volume–this is an incredible book! Schiasia examines the events of the Moro kindapping and eventual execuation through the letters written by Moro, which newspapers they appeared in, various documents of the actual moments–from the dialy media of the time What he is doing is examing not the hisotry per se of the vents, but their written documents as literture within history.
The book becomes a fascinating exploration of writ I am almost done the first of the two short books within this volume–this is an incredible book! The book becomes a aaffaire exploration of writing in relation to the presentation of events of something “already written”.
What the Moro affair does is scisacia what had been kept hidden in the public face of Italian politics of the time. One of the most explosive lines in the book is a quote from Moro in aletter to his wife, which appeared only at the time of the execution, andonly in a very obscure and overlooked newspaper. But now itis too late–they are cuaght in the unstoppable turning gears of Fate meshing into place to keep the corrupt and despotic government of Andreotti n plave, rtaher than the “historic compromise” government of Communists and Christain Democrats sharing power that Moro had envisisoned.
A very intersting and paradoxical aspect of this book is to follow Schiasia as he traces the arc of his total disgust and near hatred for Moro begin to develop for a sort of empathy whithin the conext of his being condemend not by his executioners, but by hislifelong friends and allies. The second book is about the disapprance of Italy’s most promsing physicist during the Dascist era–at a point when Italy most needed him.
Supposedly a suicide–yet the body was never found. Schiasia n the little i read in this so far is acomplishing a tour de force of investigation at both the historical and literary levels.
If you are interested in the ways one may study literatuyre as a form of archeolgocal method of understanding history–this volume is a must rea, a masterpiece.
It’s the first book by Schiasisa i have read but now plan to red many more!
Jan 18, Nick rated it really liked it Shelves: Sciascia analyzes the documents associated with the kidnapping of Moro through the lens of certain ideas of Jorge Luis Borges — that history is not an inquiry into truth, but the creator of it, that the reading of documents at one time must mean something completely different than the reading of them at another time.

So the reading of the letters and news articles of the time it happened, today brings new light to whatever “truth” may have been present when Moro, the Italian politican, was kidnapped. Sciascia is inconclusive, and that is probably the most chilling thing. That government actions, or terrorist actions, or possible collaborations of both could mean something sends chills up the spine.
Governments can so corrupt the individuals who make them up that they allow for the destruction of other individuals in order to keep the status quo. Sciascia puts his reader into the role of the existentialist detective, standing outside the action, trying desperately to unravel the mystery, and only ending up with horrifying possibilities.
Poi, all’improvviso si capisce tutto, davvero tutto. Jul 07, Harlan Wolff rated it really liked it.
Sciascia writes a detailed analysis of the kidnapping of Aldo Moro.
There is certainly more to the Moro kidnapping and murder than was reported at the time. His death changed the course of Italian political history. Offending the far right with liberal ideas is bad for your health.
Feb 03, T. Wilson rated it it was amazing. This is a great book, but perhaps only of interest to those of a certain age who recall the kidnapping and murder of the Italian politician Aldo Moro in Sciascia does a fantastic job of examining how language determines moral engagement and responsibility, with an analysis of the complex communication between Moro and the outside world, which set the stage for his ultimate demise.
